Questions and answers
The short version of how Nimbo works. Did not find your answer? Write to us.
The basics
What is Nimbo?
An app for macOS that adds a disk to the Finder. The files on that disk are stored in the cloud and downloaded in pieces when you open them, so they do not take space on your Mac. You can also reach them from any browser.
Which Macs does it run on?
macOS 26 or newer. The app uses the file system technology Apple introduced in that version, which is what lets Nimbo appear as a real disk.
Do I need internet all the time?
To open a file that is only in the cloud, yes. Files you have opened recently stay in a local cache, and the folders you mark to keep offline are always on the Mac.
What happens when I am offline?
You can browse the whole disk, open what is on the Mac and keep working. Changes you make are uploaded as soon as the connection comes back.
How much space does it use on my Mac?
Only the cache of recently opened files and the folders you keep offline. The cache has a ceiling and shrinks on its own when your Mac starts to run out of space.
Sharing and the web
How do I share a file?
Create a link to a file or a folder on the web. You can add a password and an expiry date and revoke the link at any time. Whoever gets it does not need an account.
Can people send me files?
Yes. Create a page to receive files, pointing to a folder of yours. Anyone with the link can upload, without an account, and what arrives counts toward your space.
Is there an app for iPhone, Android or Windows?
Not yet. On those devices you use Nimbo through the browser: browse, preview, upload, download and share.
Privacy and safety
Where are my files stored?
At Backblaze B2, in a data center in the United States, with server-side encryption. File names, sizes and the folder tree are kept on the Nimbo server.
Is there end-to-end encryption?
Not yet; it is coming as an option. When turned on, contents and names will be encrypted on your Mac and nobody, including us, will be able to read them. Until then, files are encrypted at rest but the service could technically access them.
What if I delete something by mistake?
It goes to the trash and stays there for 30 days. Restore it from the web and it goes back to the folder it came from.
Account and billing
How do I pay?
Billing is manual for now. Write to nimbo@lumahost.com with the space you want and we adjust your plan.
What happens when my space runs out?
New uploads stop until you free up space or add blocks. Nothing you already have is deleted.
How do I cancel or take my files out?
Copy your files from the Nimbo disk to any other drive, or download them on the web, folder by folder. Deleting the account erases everything, including the copies in the cloud.
How do I get help?
Write to nimbo@lumahost.com. A person reads every message.
